When we consider the subject of salvation and eternal life, many questions may arise:
- How can someone know for sure they are saved?
- How is it possible to be eternally saved?
- Is there more than one way to be saved, and if not, who is right?
In the gospel of John, chapter three, we find Jesus talking to a man named Nicodemus. Nicodemus was a very religious man, ye he was still in need of salvation. When Jesus began to explain to him how he could be saved and become a child of God, Nicodemus became confused and asked Jesus, “How can these things be?” The following is some of what Jesus told him:
4 Things God Wants You to Know!
1. Everyone needs to be saved.
Sometimes, we may look upon a person thinking they do not need salvation due to their social status or clean, moral living. However, the Bible teaches that “there is none righteous, no not one.” (Romans 3:10) And that we “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
Jesus told Nicodemus, “Verily, verily I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” (John 3:7)
2. Everyone can be saved.
Jesus later told Nicodemus, “…whosoever believeth in him (Jesus) should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, the He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:15,16)
One might feel that because of past mistakes and failures, it would be impossible for them to be saved and become a child of God. Yet, the Bible teaches that salvation is a free gift offered to all people, regardless of their past sins. Jesus said, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved…” (John 10:9)
3. Everyone gets saved the same way.
Today, one might think there are many ways to receive eternal life and be assured of a home in Heaven. Many different religions teach many different ways. But Jesus said that there was only ONE way! He told Nicodemus, “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5) Jesus also said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)
So there is only ONE way for every man, woman, boy, or girl to be saved. It is not by baptism, church membership, or doing good things. Only by repentance of sin and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and Him alone can we be saved and have eternal life.
4. Everyone can KNOW they are saved.
Can you really be 100% certain of your personal salvation, and know without any doubt that when you die, Heaven will be your home? ABSOLUTELY!!
Jesus told Nicodemus, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life…” (John 3:36)
How can we know it? A sure way is by the promise given in the Word of God. The Bible says, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God: that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (I John 5:13)
